this has the ring of truth to it. but i wonder: (how) is it worthwhile/adaptive? yes you get to explore a boundary, but you also alienate a friend (admittedly in a small way).

Maybe also: you need to know how strong the friendship is (if you are going to rely on it in a group vs group conflict later). May be worth risking degrading it not in order to buy information for later.
