Interestingly, the Mike Pence rule, “never be alone with a woman”, is the same rule followed by Theravada Buddhist monks. They also don’t eat after noon, don’t dance, don’t lay on high and luxurious beds, and don’t touch money. Maybe we should all just be conservative monks!?

Interestingly, both are meant to prevent possible public accusations of sexual misconduct, rather than misconduct itself. (Or, that’s my recollection of the vinaya rule—I might be mistaken.)

Standing at LaGuardia Airport and see an orthodox Jewish man arrive. He is welcomed by all. He hugs and shakes hands with men and boys. An unknowing little girl goes up to touch him and he shuns her. The community of women step in and pull her back.

Yes… easy to see how/why these customs develop in different societies. Many of us thought that mainstream America abandoning them was permanent & progress, but perhaps not so.
