Interestingly, the Mike Pence rule, “never be alone with a woman”, is the same rule followed by Theravada Buddhist monks. They also don’t eat after noon, don’t dance, don’t lay on high and luxurious beds, and don’t touch money. Maybe we should all just be conservative monks!?

I remember this bizarre monastic retreat @ IMS where I had to enter the group interview room first before any of the other women could come in. It felt absurd. The sensible non-monastic male teachers I know simply offer to keep the door open.

Standing at LaGuardia Airport and see an orthodox Jewish man arrive. He is welcomed by all. He hugs and shakes hands with men and boys. An unknowing little girl goes up to touch him and he shuns her. The community of women step in and pull her back.

Yes… easy to see how/why these customs develop in different societies. Many of us thought that mainstream America abandoning them was permanent & progress, but perhaps not so.
