I think meta types of meditation could be a gateway to this type of practice. Meta usually gives a bit more up front benefit & can fuel deeper practice.

Yes; or more generally methods that “point toward form” (as metta does) and/or that “focus on positive” (in Shinzen Young’s terminology).

I have found this true in my case. Finding awareness, and then putting the awareness on awareness produces a recursive loop, which short circuits the whole thing and produces massively destructive illuminations. Far from pleasant at first, but very effective.
