This kind of depression is tied to a lack of agency over the things that cause your emotions (including the emotional regulation itself). The purpose of meditation in such a case is to switch and bootstrap agencies for (meta)regulation.

Yes—meditation can also be powerfully useful as a way out of depression. But you need to know how to apply it, since done wrong it can make things much worse.

I tend to practice less during more depressive periods of life. I’ve noticed that during these times I am often working with finding a new answer to the question, “what is meditation?”

Yes, important points here! The untrained body-mind needs to anchor itself to something good (metta) and/or cut - or see through (vipassana) - the chains of identification with the depression; the tangled web of verbal thoughts, visual thoughts, and emotional somatic sensations.

At least you could always use the meditation CD as a frisbee when "The Voice" sent you to the edge.. What have the Digitals ever done for us ? Well, apart from instant global communications. And cat pictures, obviously.
