I am looking for something about Theravada, from the 1700s. Earlier if possible

I don’t know of an overall critical history of Theravada, even in the 1700s+. (I know Theravada much less well than other systems, also.)

However: Spiro’s _Buddhism and Society_ is a major locus classicus. On Burmese Buddhism. More anthro than thistorical, but some history.

Everyone seems to agree that Maitreya is central to Theravada, but i can't find one historical analysis.

I didn’t know that… but I don’t know Theravada well. Key realization, tho: “Theravada” is not the polite word for “Hinayana.” >

Theravada has *always* included Mahayana and Vajrayana and still does. The claim that it doesn’t is late-1800s political propaganda.

This looks very interesting and at least somewhat relevant, but I haven’t read the book reviewed: http://www.globalbuddhism.org/jgb/index.php/jgb/article/view/12/12 …
