I am looking for something about Theravada, from the 1700s. Earlier if possible

I don’t know of an overall critical history of Theravada, even in the 1700s+. (I know Theravada much less well than other systems, also.)

However: Spiro’s _Buddhism and Society_ is a major locus classicus. On Burmese Buddhism. More anthro than thistorical, but some history.

Gombrich & Obeysekere’s _Buddhism Transformed_ on recent history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka (also genocidal) is quite good
