The fact that the median meta-rationalist is unmotivated and unable to explain herself makes me wonder why anyone should even try to grok itpic.twitter.com/mL9lMygc9Q
Whereas rationalists are willing and often able. The motivation for Rationality is Rat=winning. The motivation for meta-Rationality is ???
Winning is *normatively* the goal of rationality (in utilitarian frameworks), tho personal motivations are varied, multiple and nebulous…
There’s no widely-agreed formulation, but “understanding” or maybe even “wisdom” is normatively the motivation for meta-rationality,
And, for meta, “understanding” means something relevantly different: not “able to do calculations using the correct model of X,” but
“able to engage with X using a wide variety of models and methods, depending on how X manifests in a particular case.”
