That’s funny! Most dharmabots know only a few sutras (or just quotes!) I eventually read dozens of tedious sutras so I could shut them up.

Deliberately not actually reading scripture is one of the ways contemporary Buddhists maintain their blind faith.

Because once you start actually reading them… it gets harder and harder to take them seriously.

Good point, and I appreciate your sacrifice! I admit I have not yet read suttras extensively, not seeing them useful.

Uh, I’m probably violating the vow against disparaging the lower yanas… but maybe I can say the essence of Sutra is good, though texts suck.

The whole Pali Canon is online. It’s an interesting exercise to just pick random texts in it and read them. Most are very short—one page.

At a quick glance, looks similar to many other similar things :) Nice that he’s an ex-astronomer though!

His ecstatic experiences and descriptions of the states of meditative jhana are unique afaik.
