Is this the same phenomenon as when people bash suttra quotes on your face when you try to talk about Buddhism in critical/reflective way?
Spending a few hours doing that does give you a sense of what the texture of the scriptural corpus is.

I would guess that much less than 1% of Western Buddhists have spent more than a couple hours reading scripture. It is not encouraged…
