I think that modern Buddhism knows, at some level, that it’s obsolete and over, and recognizes that defense is impossible, so it doesn’t try

Yeah, hard to know. But I suspect a degree of “false consciousness” in the existentialist sense. Buddhists are thick, but not THAT thick.

True, but we're all doing a bit of that to get by. People are far more willing to trade autonomy of thought for reassurance & identity.

I think both are true! One tries to buy into a belief system, and that semi-works, but one also knows it’s not actually true.
