@Meaningness Met a dharma teacher today, student of late Namgyal Rinpoche. He asked me if I've been given a yidam yet. What does that mean?

In some but not all Vajrayana traditions, your lama assigns you a specific yidam to practice.

In some but not all Vajrayana traditions, this is made into a Big Deal. The person was asking whether you’d had the Big Deal.

Treating it as a Big Deal works very well for some people, and is counterproductive for others…

Yea, I was getting that from his other students a bit. I have this thing where I feel compelled to try to meet experienced dharma teachers..

...in the hopes that I will learn something, or experience a transmission. Part of it is awe and respect, part is my own neediness I think.

Yes… transmission is a real thing, and awe and respect are necessary for it! If blind, they can also be counterproductive especially later.

Good to know. A part of me feels shy (ashamed?) about it... thoughts saying I'm just being a mindless fanboy. But I do keep a critical eye.
