1 Western Buddhism failed mainly for lack of competent clergy. In Asia, that's monks. Monasticism can't, doesn't, won't work in the West.
My question is whether the stuff they are teaching is relevant to the problems we face now, and will face in future.

Put a different way: what do they offer that secular mindfulness does not?

Unless there is distinctive value there, I see no future for them. So far I have not seen a clear articulation of distinctive value.
