Yes; but insisting that this change doesn’t matter may be dooming the Church in rich countries.

I'm just saying it matters less when being a cleric is a vocation (with vows) instead of mere employment

I see your point, but my understanding is that the Catholic Church has much more of a problem attracting clergy than Protestant ones.

a lot of those numbers can be chalked down to clergy essentially being volunteer side-jobs in a lot of Protestant churches

Yes, that’s closely analogous to the problem in Western Buddhism, where it’s expected that virtually all the clergy are amateurs w/ day jobs

why do Western Buddhists have problems with a vow of poverty? Isn't this an indictment of Western Buddhism?

The Catholic Church does give those who take a vow of poverty food and shelter. There’s no mechanism for that in Western Buddhism.

Asian Buddhists have institutions that provide support for monks and nuns. Westerner Buddhists don’t respect monasticism.

All I hear is indictments of Western Buddhism! My understanding of Buddhism is that monasticism is an essential institution
