These are all true of chess, too, right?
Yes… At one time chess was thought to be a critical test for AI. Then it turned out tree search makes it trivial if you have enough MHz.
So, chess showed us nothing about AI, although we learned a bit about tree search. Plus, we learned board games are nothing like most tasks.
So everyone in AI lost interest in board games. Go was a backwater for decades.
AlphaGo shows you can brute-force the static evaluator if you have enough teraflops. Totally unsurprising:board games are trivial like that.
All board games are perfectly-crisp combinatorial optimization problems. That’s what computers are good at. Real life is not like that.
Yeah, I don't disagree at all that the world is much more complex. Maybe ~infinitely more complex.
Well, it’s not just that it’s complex; it’s that it’s nebulous. It doesn’t come pre-parsed into well-defined objects, properties, actions.
I think that's covered by ~infinitely more complex but yeah I agree. We imagine it does bc that's how our heuristics interact with it.
