They did brute force it. They just brute-forced the static evaluator instead of the tree search.
Brute forcing the evaluator shows that we can get visual cortex-like pattern recognition though. PR seems like an important subpart of AI.
It doesn’t seem to me that go is interestingly similar to typical visual tasks, nor that AlphaGo does similar computations.
