Yes… At one time chess was thought to be a critical test for AI. Then it turned out tree search makes it trivial if you have enough MHz.
So, chess showed us nothing about AI, although we learned a bit about tree search. Plus, we learned board games are nothing like most tasks.
So everyone in AI lost interest in board games. Go was a backwater for decades.
I think "solving" it to the degree and in the way we have has been helpful for AI research though. Since we can't brute force it yet.
They did brute force it. They just brute-forced the static evaluator instead of the tree search.
