Is depressive realism valid? I've heard there are severe criticisms of the research?

That’s my understanding, yes. There are certain tasks on which depressed people do give more realistic answers; others, less realistic.

Basically, on tasks where people are typically over-optimistic, depressed people are less optimistic, so more realistic.

On tasks where people on average estimate accurately, depression makes you too pessimistic, so less realistic. But am no expert on this!
