Rapid drop, then rise, in Tahoe lake level + wave action, has generated barrier dunes on beaches. Checked wiki: no one knows how this works.

Not a place I know! I love Sanibel, another barrier dune island a bit to the south. Visited Appalachicola as a kid; don’t remember it
