Phrase substitution works extremely well on news stories because they just string cliches together. Fails completely on unfamiliar material.
Google Translate not only does not *understand* the text, it doesn’t even have any knowledge of English grammar. I find that surprising.
When I was doing AI, I was skeptical of the work in syntax, but I didn’t think it was *entirely* worthless. Apparently Google found it was.
I thought Becker’s Phrasal Lexicon paper http://clair.eecs.umich.edu/aan/paper.php?paper_id=T75-2013 … was the best thing in the field. Mostly ignored because paradigm-breaking.
Becker gets the last laugh: Google Translate works according to his insightful scheme. But, this is mostly how language really works, too!
