How do you react to people retweeting stuff that praises them? Like if I were to retweet somebody saying "@xuenay's essay is really cool everyone should read it". I see other people doing this but feel kinda weird about doing it myself. Not sure if I should?

Agree there's a big difference, I often think 'um... you can just SAY that??' reading Americans here I don't see a problem with the way you retweet fwiw, generally you're signal-boosting someone saying something thoughtful about your stuff rather than generic 'yay awesome!'

I’m becoming incrementally more American in this respect since being here, it’ll be interesting to see how far that goes. Statements I once found cringe-worthy seem less so now. Tho I confess I’m still cautious applying the principle to myself. I’m still a Mumblybrit at heart.

Picking this up again: yes, it’s a significant cultural difference. Generalizing widely, it does seem tasteless and redundant to Brits and comfortably confident to Americans. But that’s changing a lot. Much more common now across the board than it was 5-10 years ago.

Americans are the kings of self promotion, and I wonder how they manage. Because of my cultural conditioning, I find it extremely hard to self-promote my scientific stuff. Here I am just a pseudonymous account - intentionally avoiding my name and face.

Ha, no escape, I always visualise your facial expression and your accent when I read your tweets :-)
