What do you think? I go back and forth about this and usually conclude that, in moderation, it’s on average actively beneficial for all parties. But I do wonder how it comes across!https://twitter.com/xuenay/status/1263558144745144336 …

    David Chapman added,

    Kaj Sotala @xuenay
How do you react to people retweeting stuff that praises them? Like if I were to retweet somebody saying "@xuenay's essay is really cool everyone should read it". I see other people doing this but feel kinda weird about doing it myself. Not sure if I should?

*in moderation* is the key here. And I think retweeting positive feedback or praise that has content beyond just a vague positive sentiment has more utility to me.

I think it's sweet when people quote tweet praise and thank them for the kind words. That said, I try to resist saying "you should read this/you will enjoy this" etc bc what do I know? Maybe you're going to hate this, maybe you shouldn't read this. At most I try to say I like it.

        David Cabo Retweeted Anders Sandberg

Some accounts are obnoxious and boring because they abuse RTs in a very regular basis, but yours is way far from that, I can’t remember you doing it. In any case, this would be a good summary for me: it’s totally fine when it continues the conversationhttps://twitter.com/anderssandberg/status/1263566328784248832 …

        David Cabo added,

I like it more the more the praise is contentful: that something you done is cool is nice, but someone saying "it is cool because X" or "this made me think of Y" indicates more engagement, and is more retweetworthy.

I think it depends on whether praise is useful or not? If someone gives an interesting compliment that may appeal in a different way to the recipients usual tweets then that seems reasonable. It it's just sycophancy then maybe not.

In general, it's somewhat weird. And yet, depends on who retweets, who praises, the content/quality of praise, and the comment if any with RT.

If there is no information beyond the endorsement, useless. Recommending is good because it points to things the reader probably values and may not have seen otherwise. A RTd endorsement is only seen by those who already follow the author. (It also comes off as insecure/needy.)
