Not all great scientists are like this, but many I know are today. This is not a coincidence. Getting institutional support is more and more difficult for the sorts of people who can contribute most to human understanding, and thereby to material and social progress.pic.twitter.com/zMF5j4OBAj

Doesn't really change the question of how we support people like this today, but I do often wonder how many people are like this primarily because growing up smarter than everyone around you is super traumatic. If we'd supported them better as kids what would they be like?

One possibility is that they'd be even better at science than they are now. Another is that they only developed their particular intellectual obsessions as a trauma response.

There is clearly an optimum amount of trauma, otherwise you end up like me and burn out after master's year. Although to be fair my inability to get a PhD position (because I'm not a hypersocial grifter?) might have contributed to that.

Still kind of pissed that no one told me to take undergrad research opportunities more seriously. I only found this out way too late because I was too busy doing things I was passionate about.

Sorry but that also sounds like many of our new Silicon Valley overlords. The science/technology/ political overlap is such that your ability to relate to the average human is crucial for societal cohesion which is the messy stuff that humans need more than ever with 7bn of us

I'd really feel much more sympathetic to cries for social cohesion if they didn't so often sound like "Conform to our demands while being given utterly no appropriate support to do so, nerd"
