It seems weird to me that private for-profit hospitals Are Not Good at seemingly BASIC applications of the germ theory of disease to their own buildings and people. Like... how can MRSA and CDiff lurk in hospitals for DECADES and not be eradicated? What am I missing?

one anecdote I know: i applied for a job once at a computational-biology lab at Mt. Sinai Hospital. They let me sit in on their "deciding what projects to pursue this year" discussion section. I saw them give up on the project to track the spread of nosocomial infections

because it would have involved too much negotiating with the hospital bureaucracy. like, they didn't fight for the project being approved and lose; they just were like "meh, this sounds like a lot of work."

it's always weird to me in general when people who seem to have lots of social confidence are also weirdly quick to give in to social pressure...like, you'd think all that testosterone and self-esteem was for *winning at conflicts*, but noooo.

At risk of being Annoying Guy In Your Mentions: in other species, that stuff is to credibly signal that you *could* win a dominance contest if you had to, which saves all parties from actually fighting (which could be fatal).

you are correct and you're the USEFUL guy in my mentions, sorry I overlooked that, this explains a lot about the "macho but surprisingly willing to fold when challenged" behavior pattern

In my experience, this can give geeks an edge in negotiations with neurotypical alpha male blowhards. We’re just not impressed by that stuff. “Issue a credible specific threat or get lost” can work.

It can also create insane hatred and self-destructive aggression (because they may never have been called like that and experience it as massive humiliation) so needs to be deployed judiciously.
