🎙 A must-listen if you have any interest in Vajrayana in the West. Ken McLeod with @OortCloudAtlashttps://deconstructingyourself.com/vajrayana-compassion-and-the-importance-of-the-teacher-with-ken-mcleod.html …

where does one go about finding vajrayana gurus in the west? is it impossible? everything i've read/heard seems to be a complaint that they aren't around anymore

Well, the issue isn’t finding one—they’re a dime a dozen, every town has a Tibetan Center. It’s finding one with whom one can have a good enough fit that you can learn from them. (As Ken McLeod said.) That used to be difficult; for various reasons, it is now nearly impossible.

Looking through this list again… pretty discouraging. I’m no longer an Aro gTér student, although I’d still recommend it for some people. Hokai is still teaching. 3Doors seems to still be going; don’t know much about it. Reggie Ray blew up; Shambhala Training blew up; >

relatedly, in the absence of finding a good teacher do you think it would make more sense to attempt to reconstruct practices from texts or to simply go elsewhere to find a more living tradition?

I am confident that you can’t reconstruct the practices from texts. Unfortunate.

tbh i'm pretty mad about this (not at you, just at the situation) because you + @_awbery_ have really done a fantastic job at pitching vajra and demonstrating where you can go if you "get it" but it sounds like there's no way to walk the same path

Just as you can’t learn to drive by reading a book. (It’s not that the practices are secret; they aren’t. It’s that reading a description is useless.) https://meaningness.com/metablog/upgrade-your-cargo-cult …pic.twitter.com/65nkPTSnXX
