I think publications in obscure areas are sometimes correct, anything popular (as measured by grant trends) has to be considered pure garbage. I'd also make a partial exception for mathematics, which has radically different validity criteria.
Not just math, contact with reality is sufficient. Materials science has progressed steadily because you can only fudge a model for so long before someone actually makes the material and knows if the model is right.
