You may very likely be confusing "Sutric" approaches to Buddhism, with the Tantra / Dzogchen approaches:https://roamresearch.com/#/app/HowToHuman/page/IDGbGk8JJ …

I guess I would normally describe Nyingma as a school and Dzogchen as a yana, but I like the idea of an institution being equivalent to yana.

The three way yana categorisation into Sutra, Tantra and Dzogchen is from Dzogchen perspective. Understanding those yanas in terms of their principle and function has been helpful for me, both in personal practice and in understanding where other people are coming from.

Namkhai Norbu was quite fond of that categorisation but I dunno where it originates. (Would love to. I doubt it’s more than a few centuries old but could be wrong.) New Bon maybe?

The Sutra vs Tantra distinction is universally accepted; and Dzogchen is anomalous if categorized as part of Tantra (as it often is), so it’s a natural three-way division. It’s not made explicit in the Big Red Book, but Dudjom Rinpoche does treat Atiyoga=Dzogchen as distinct
