“Sometimes missing Praetorius” is a half-written philosophical vampire novella about the meanings of past popular culture. It begins thus:pic.twitter.com/Ftdiwec9Fu
Bowling for Soup’s 1985 “is about a middle-aged woman who is stuck in the 1980s due to being in denial that her life is zooming by so fast and the fact that she never got to live out her ideal life before settling down and starting a family.” —Wikipediahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K38xNqZvBJI …
“1985” is a masterpiece, but it was recorded in 2004, which is probably before you were born. https://genius.com/Bowling-for-soup-1985-lyrics …pic.twitter.com/14qutPf0WB
My narrator, having been undead for four centuries, has much popular culture to feel nostalgic for. But most of all dancing to the music of Praetorius, with Claudia, the love of his life, before he died.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3U5aYluCVk …
I think part of the lure of nostalgia is that one intuits that familiar points in the past are safe -- because the dangers *then* are entirely known *now*, and the lessons learned. The past wasn't safe or comfortable at the time. It helps me to remember this, anyway.
Nostalgia can be a good thing, I think, so long as it doesn’t stop you from enjoying current culture as well.
The narrator wryly contrasts his enjoyment of cutting-edge EDM with Vlad Tepes, who is stuck in 1476 and is still wearing the same hat. It's kind of cool, but...pic.twitter.com/yYQcmk40SI
With an underbite like that, it's a wonder Vlad can feed at all.
