If true, it's probably because less and less room has been granted for legitimate learning from childhood. More and more emphasis on the numbers/prestige game.

This is really interesting. I've recently become a senior enough engineer to start hiring young people and I've concluded the key is to find people that tinker/make in their spare time, and have done so since they were a kid.
Or, y'know, play a musical instrument seriously enough to have to maintain it...
