🎙 Half an hour of hardcore meta-rational discussion by the @blackgoatpod team, starting at 36:00 (context starting 32:00). If you want to know what meta-rationality sounds like, this is best example I’ve found so far. (Explanatory 🧵 follows…)http://www.theblackgoatpodcast.com/posts/auxiliary-turtles-all-the-way-down/ …

Three leaders of the movement to restore credibility to experimental psychology, working out in candid real-time discussion how to think about the results of a large replication study. Issues here are not “is this true?” (uncertainty) but “what does this MEAN?” (nebulosity).

Science eventually needs to establish what is true (epistemology)—and that is what they ultimately aim for. But the field’s methodological crisis requires stepping back and investigating prior, ontological questions (what framework can we use to think about this?).

Discussion shows clearly the distinction between philosophy of science (abstract, theoretical) and meta-rationality (concrete, pragmatic). @blackgoatpod know the philosophy and refer to it in passing, but their concern is with the specifics of *how do we do our science better*.

Meta-rationality is not systematic rationality applied to itself: The discussion has no set framework, no taken-for-granted axioms or agreed-on methods. Everything is open to question and potentially up for grabs. These are top people in their field trying to make sense of it.

Meta-rationality is also not “mere reasonableness”: this discussion is highly technical, its subject matter is experimental methodology, and it takes understanding of rational principles and methods for granted.

A presentational difficulty for me: meta-rationality always involves mastery of the technical specifics. I can’t get readers up to speed on multiple sciences, so each case study will inevitably involve a lot of vague handwaving.

I planned to write a long post about this 30-minute discussion, but eventually realized that explaining the relevant technical specifics of experimental psychology was going to be too complex.

So I guess I recommend listening to it impressionistically, if you don’t have the background. Ignore unfamiliar terms and concepts, and see what you can get out of it!http://www.theblackgoatpodcast.com/posts/auxiliary-turtles-all-the-way-down/ …
