I wonder how many people meditate this way for hundreds of hours and later regret it. I did. Unfortunately this form of meditation seems to be spreading. A lot of people are aiming for equanimity and ending up with apathy.

(Sorry to hear that!) Are there names for the different kinds of meditation which separate out this dissociated kind? Or is it more about how a teacher leads it? Any recommendations for better/worse kinds of meditation?

I’ve been ranting about this for years. The goal of mainstream Buddhism (“Sutrayana”) is not easily distinguishable from deep depression. The methods were designed to induce that state. This is not what most contemporary people want. I think this has been something of a disaster

I do think it has good results in _some_ cases; did a retreat a few weeks back where I did a lot of sitting with discomfort, which eventually caused my brain to notice that it was mostly just wasting energy struggling pointlessly against it.https://twitter.com/xuenay/status/1235146127583961091 …

So far, there seems to have been a lasting effect which generalized to other things, and made it easier to actually take concrete actions that lead to better outcomes. As opposed to stressing out about them feeling uncomfortable and thrashing around not doing anything.

Yes… anecdotally it’s positive (sometimes massively so) for many/most who stick with it. It seems somewhat mysterious that a practice designed to bring about a dissolution sometimes has quite different, valuable results.

One could speculate about how/why, but I’m increasingly disenchanted with the quality of research in the area; it’s been driven by ideological bias. So unfortunately we understand much less than would be good.

I wish researchers would declare the diffs in their beliefs due to their work. Sort of a "pre-registered beliefs" model. In many cases the diffs would be the empty set.
