Robert Kegan explaining his adult developmental theory, with @dthorson

This was excellent. As for support for development, I tend to agree that one is "stage-bound," i.e., not able to fully grok multiple stages ahead. Formative for me was a couple of instances of fully immersing in a system and then knowing when to dispense with it for "flow."

But you have to believe in it (at least the first time) or you do it half-assedly; successful flow through minimal management and jaded negligence are different.

Manners et al (2004) say otherwise; they structured their development two stages above for each participant. I haven't seen that documented anywhere else. And I was unable to obtain the "detailed outline."

Manners and Durkin wrote a couple of theory papers, too: Manners, J. and Durkin, K. 2000. Processes involved in adult ego development: a conceptual framework. Developmental Review, vol. 20, p. 475-513.

Note that they don't cite Kegan, Torbert, or any of that crowd. I can only guess at the history, but they seem to be a literature fork off Loevinger.
