🎙 Robert Kegan explaining his adult developmental theory, with @dthorson “If you want to be Stage 5 because all the cool kids are, that’s a Stage 3 aspiration. If you want it because Stage 5 is the Correct way of thinking, that’s a Stage 4 aspiration.”https://anchor.fm/emerge/episodes/Robert-Kegan---The-Five-Stages-of-Adult-Development-And-Why-You-Probably-Arent-Stage-5-eb8gug …

I work w communities in which there is very little education and maximum trauma. I have news for Kegan, those communities of people can understand and respond to complexity much better than any academic I have met. Why? Because they have been betrayed by the system. Level 5? Meh.

Kegan has a model based on longitudinal experimental data of a demographically limited population. No claims of universality. Interdependence can be understood (but differently) & a motivator (for different reasons) throughout development. The model isn't elitist. It just is.

Where's the place to look for Kegan's main longitudinal study? Is there really one, or does it kind of sit behind the books, in a not very obvious way? ;-) He also says it doesn't correlate with IQ. Never links to any research proving this this though...

I did try and find a journal link just now and had some trouble. All citations do seem to lead back to his books. I remember his data in In Over Our Heads but without it in front of me I couldn't tell you were they 1st appeared. #AcademicTwitter HALPhttps://www.gse.harvard.edu/faculty/robert-kegan …

Afaict the six-year longitudinal study (promised in _SOI Guide_ p249) was not only never published, even summary data has never been discussed. I assume the empirical work was not completed due to unfortunate circumstances of some sort or another.

I talked with Kegan about data-merging his model with an automated developmental one. Start getting nationally representative samples people will pay attention to...! ;-)

Yes, I hope the empirical work in this field can be greatly improved in both quantity and quality! Is there an automated developmental model? Or is that something you are working on now?

I was thinking about a merger with Maslowian 'Values Modes': http://www.cultdyn.co.uk/valuesmodes.html … Kegan has a graph correlating w. Maslow in Evolving Self. Lectica is mostly automated now? And StageLens is. Accuracy?! I really want to find one for some research a couple of us are keen to do!

Ah I didn’t know about StageLens, thanks! Will be interested to learn whether they’re open to validation studies from other researchers

As far as I understand there’s not a great evidence base for it. Is that bonkers? So many intelligent folk are really into it. The sorts of people who are quite keen on trials, graphs, data, that sort of thing.
