Mathematicians and scientists have vague folk theories of what math and science are that both are blurred ancestral memories of pre-WWII logical positivism.
These theories are totally wrong, but do little *direct* harm because they are mainly ignored in practice.

I thought the complaint was that the proof itself was not available, as it relied on other proofs that were not published. This is exceptional. The biggest problem seems to me that the elders themselves are not able to re-derive proofs. Not that some knowledge is illegible.

In 10 years' time there are many possibilities, e.g. (1) new proofs are discovered of the unpublished parts, (2) people stick to their promises and write the unpublished parts, (3) unpublished parts turn out to be wrong [VERY UNLIKELY], (4) still unpublished and people are dying.
