Mathematicians and scientists have vague folk theories of what math and science are that both are blurred ancestral memories of pre-WWII logical positivism.
These theories are totally wrong, but do little *direct* harm because they are mainly ignored in practice.

I'm not 100% convinced by the Kegan framework but this honestly sounds kind of like the stereotypical misrepresentation of Stage 5 by Stage 4 as Stage 3. Specific example: "abstract nonsense" is literally a joke, if sometimes an irritated one.

To expand: "abstract nonsense" is a joke about category theory. In practice, a phrasing like "you do this by abstract nonsense" translates to "this is a tedious but mechanical application of category theory", ie "anyone who's done this once can do it again and doesn't want to"
