This is great and has made a few things fall into place for me. Now thinking about the connection between indexicality and my own favourite bit of horrible jargon, cognitive decoupling. Both are to do with amount of context but how much do they overlap?https://twitter.com/literalbanana/status/1222019385834950656 …

Yeah they're definitely highly related so maybe I should phrase it the other way round - what are the differences, if there are any?

Well the cognitive decoupling literature is cognitivist so it posits boxes in the brain, which is almost certainly wrong (as Stanovich has come to say himself). From an EM pov, decontextualization is a collection of cultural practices, which are a big part of doing-being-rational

I think I took that away from “Distinguishing the reflective, algorithmic and autonomous mind”, but I think you’ve read that, so maybe I’m misinterpreting it?

He uses “mindware” to mean something like “cultural practices” although ofc his framework and language is ludicrously stuck in 1980s cogsci and is all boxes and arrows

Ha, I thought I had read that too, but probably not very carefully! I do remember that even his recent stuff is still in the same cogsci paradigm as the bananaphone, which is why I was surprised.

Well he’s come around to the view that things 1 and 2 are not systems, as he had originally posited, but are ways of cognizing (“process” or “styles’) that each probably draw on many boxes-in-the-head; and moreover there’s a thing 3 that’s approximately meta-rationality, and

thing 1 isn’t a thing at all, it’s a hodgepodge of different processes, so lumping everything non-rational together was a serious mistake. Real progress

also, um, ugh, I just discovered THIS, which had not turned up in previous literature searches! I should be excited but at the moment I don’t have the mental bandwidth to take it in: http://www.keithstanovich.com/Site/Research_on_Reasoning_files/Stanovich_JMP_15.pdf …
