serious about this- everyone hates filing tax returns, it's a huge waste of time, and there's relatively few entrenched interests opposing it compared to the larger considerations

opposition is - tax filing companies (H&R block, etc) - tax accountants at large - existing IRS employees who would no longer be needed - politicians paid off by all of the above am I missing anyone?

and you can sell it to everyone: - left auth: easier for the govt to collect taxes - left lib: helps poor disproportionately impacted by complex system - right auth: make the government run on time - right lib: Abolish The IRS - centrists: Europe does it, why can't we?!

Strong agreement with the program in “ought” space, but skeptical that it will happen in “is” space. What political approach would acknowledge that this is unlikely without giving in to “everything is hopeless; we’re all doomed”?

unclear- I think the
@SamoBurja angle would be that this could be solved simply by getting the right person in charge of the IRS. but then the popularity doesn't really matter since that's an appointed position. feels like it could be part of a Yang-like platform though3 replies 1 retweet 2 likes -
as far as explicitly acknowledging the likelihood of it happening- unclear why a movement on this front would need that acknowledgment any more than a political movement on other fronts

I was thinking of this as a tactical move in reestablishing state capacity? rather than as a single-issue movement?

i guess tactical by whom? the only affordance i have available is convincing other proles that this is a good idea in the hopes that it becomes popular enough for someone to do something about it. if i actually had any leverage on the issue then i could think about tactics

but yes, i see what you're getting at- what would make this the first step in a resurrection vs a marginal improvement in an otherwise dying system?

Yes that’s a great framing, although what I had was sort of the converse: given that *this* sort of small step seems fairly improbable, what sorts of steps are both achievable and valuable?

Aikido moves that take entrenched interests by surprise and make progress without bringing quantitatively greater force against them; rather by redirecting forces in unexpected directions. Not a fan of our prez, but he did something like that…
