It's not necessarily about coherence so much as safety I think. Some parts of your self are harder to let out in public when the consequences will rebound on you directly. Coherence is one aspect of that but there are others.
And even when it's stuff you could talk about in public it can be helpful to lower the cost of talking about it, or to talk with different people than you otherwise would.
