Ha I'm never going to escape that question! I'm resigned to my fate now and I would like to hear it :)

After thinking about it, I realize I just reinvented @_awbery_’s analysis in different language. The part of the eggplant I’m working on now is “so how do we actually abstract reality into math and what does that mean” and word problems are relevant albeit mainly erroneously

Everyone knows word problems are only metaphorically and misleadingly similar to actual real-world abstraction, but since no one seems to have actually bothered to even think about, never mind empirically study, the latter, they’re kind of all we have to go on :(

And also repeatedly discovering that fields I studied 30 years ago, that were making good progress, were simply abandoned afaict. Not due to intrinsic difficulty, but because fashions changed, afaict.

It seems like in a lot of fields, the direction is set by a handful of highly creative, productive people who set the research program, and then there’s a few hundred followers who do the grunt work. When for whatever reason the 1-6 leaders stop functioning, the field does too.
