I'm not sure this is bad though? Are we sure that "beefing" isn't just the sign of people having more leisure and using it in the way people like best, by squabbling, relatively bloodlessly?

Well it’s destroyed careers and mental health for a lot of people so bloodless != harmless

I guess you’d feel those were bigger deals if you’re close to the people harmed. I know that stuff happens but I’m comparing to worse alternatives. What do you think of the theory that entertainment absorbs energy that might be otherwise used for war or civil unrest?

I think that’s plausible, but there are still-less-harmful alternatives. Football comes to mind.https://twitter.com/Meaningness/status/1218261274590474240 …

I’ve thought about getting into football but last time I tried the theory was too intricate for me to grasp and there weren’t any discernible feelings. Fiction/art seems more my speed for “leisure & social engagement not easily confused with objective truth.”

Tbc, this was not a personal recommendation! I find football entirely uninteresting and somewhat repellent. But it functions as an effective war-substitute for a large fraction of the population, and is less harmful than the “culture war”.
