Pizza-as-understood-by-Americans doesn't include Margherita? I genuinely wasn't aware of that. What happens when you show an American a Margherita pizza? Do they assume it's some weird European perversion? Could someone make money by trying to sell Margherita pizza in the US?

N=1 but I’ve had an American friend who made fun of Margherita before... UK also has very different (Americanised?) styles of pizza compared to Germany (which I think is generally closer to Italian styles, but it’s been a while since I’ve been to Italy)

American style pizza was not imported into Italy, then re-invented then exported. i'm not sure what point you are tryng to make, but pizza in Italy really has no transactions in the way you describe. No trying to be hard on you, but no other way to say this.
