Spent 3 hours trying to get current Ruby version (2.7) running on CentOS 7 (which distributes 2.0); gave up after compilation dependencies hell. Then spent an hour and half trying to do the same on MacOS (distributes 2.3); failed similarly. Is Ruby de facto abandonware now?

After reading this tweet, I tried setting up a Centos 7 VM on macOS, installing rbenv, the dependencies required by ruby-build and then install ruby 2.7.0 I followed https://linuxize.com/post/how-to-install-ruby-on-centos-7/ … . PS: I didn't install the libyaml-devel package Everything went well for me.

Thanks! I should have kept detailed notes and filed a proper bug report instead of griping on twitter :(

It’s true that Ruby can be a challenge to install. On macOS, I recommend Homebrew (coincidentally written in Ruby itself) plus rbenv. That combination has proven quite reliable in recent years.

@yukihiro_matz Are there plans to work on Ruby’s ease of installation? David Chapman here is an experienced computer user but had to give up trying to install Ruby on both Linux and macOS. I’ve certainly had my share of woes as well, and I’d love to help smooth out the ride. - 1 more reply
