At a very basic level, the self can be understood as a contraction against groundlessness--an attempt to find solid ground & a clear reference point in the midst of chaotic & uncontrolled flux.

This is well expressed as is the next tweet; both are observations/experiences I'm familiar with through practice, but hadn't voiced, and that remain fascinating. Thanks.

Thanks. I won't take full credit for this understanding however--as much as I'd like to--because it was really Trungpa's early writing that helped me clue into self as a reaction to groundlessness. It still amazes me how
his teachings were.2 replies 0 retweets 9 likes -
My Shambhala teacher explained to me that his books sprout new chapters as your practice develops. You can go back a year later, two years later, five years later, and reread them, and there’s a whole bunch of new material that you are sure he didn’t say the last time through.
