It's always interesting when the subject of "the" comes up in discussing language with someone whose native language does not include such a concept. I sometimes tell my Japanese friends that "the" is like が and "a" is like は, which is only a rough analogy but seems to help.

Yes; labeling things is a “stupid referring trick” (“ethnomethod”) for accomplishing referring. Sometimes the best one available, but usually more work than it’s worth!
