But, probably you need to read a plot summary to follow it, if not the Witcher books. The Netflix version follows the book plot, not the game plot, if you’ve played those.https://twitter.com/AnAvianOmen/status/1208425528287473665 …

Even as someone familiar with the lore from having played Witcher 3, it was a problem.

The books are… OK? Good some of the time? English translation problem? They bog down for a hundred pages at a stretch and then suddenly take off. Whereas Witcher 3 is one of the greatest vidyas of all time. The movie visuals stay quite close to the Witcher 3 prototypes, btw.

I think the books are amazing, but unfortunatelly a lot of what makes them great is hard to translate. They have a distinctivly "Slavic" climate. Part of it are the monsters, but a large part is the language. The dialogues in english just don't have the same feeling as in polish.

Very interesting; I have suspected that important things are lost in the English translations

I think so. The original uses a lot of anachronism. Imagine you have a fantasy novel which mixes modern english with english from Shakespeare's time skillfully. Now try to translate that, especially when a lot of the "feel" is in how words sound.

that's Roger Zelazny though (Le Guin made fun of him for it)
