Tfw, in a discussion of the nature of believing, you use as examples some hypothetical people believing random things, and then your mentions are full of people arguing that the example beliefs are true or false.https://twitter.com/robinhanson/status/1206776893124546560 …

Most living humans are actually "ghosts re abstraction". That is, people around them mostly only listen carefully to them re their concrete statements. If they start to talk more abstractly, others may nod & make encouraging grunts, but mostly they aren't actually listening.

David I like to get my hands on this but can't find the hypothetical people discussing hypothetical whatever's it's mostly other people's responses and very little follow-up by Robin Hanson.

Nothing to do with him orher than it seemed to be an instance of the thing he described?

I've seen something that goes in the opposite direction, where some abstract point is drawn from an example that doesn't support it, and questioning this causes the speaker to argue that only the abstraction matters. Much less common though!

The ratio of how common each thing is is flipped in philosophy circles. 🙃 Also common is starting abstract, and then being unable to go from abstract to a specific application. (Ivory tower, or going into the stratosphere, or not "operationalizing".)
