This thread seems important. If ideas around critical rationalism are causing people life problems, that's a major issue. I hope CR can be patched up to not have these issues. (I think there's the makings of a good solution: more leaning on tradition, actual fallibilism, etc.)https://twitter.com/tjaulow/status/1206188493421985792 …

fwiw, this sounds like classic postrational nihilism. Finding ways to help people avoid it is one of my main projects :) https://meaningness.com/metablog/stem-fluidity-bridge#postrationalism …pic.twitter.com/7lDc3jLhRr

No. About once every three months I re-read the blurb/introduction and re-conclude that I’m not going to get anything out of it. I could be wrong :)

I ask because, in your terms, I definitely made the trip from stage 4 to 5 practically painlessly and BoI was a big part of that. Also I am very confident you are indeed wrong :)

What I would like to read is a philosophically sophisticated argument for critical rationalism that takes seriously the standard objections to it. I have not found one, and BoI does not appear to be that. If anyone can recommend one, I would be very grateful!

Peter Godfrey-Smith’s _Theory and Reality_ has an introductory overview of criticisms from a philosophical perspective. Just at the level of logic, it doesn’t do the work it would need to do.pic.twitter.com/P07TV8QsCs

Rafe Champion went over the criticism in that Bookhttp://www.criticalrationalism.net/2012/04/11/theory-and-reality-by-peter-godfrey-smith/ …

Thanks! I read this. I found it unconvincing.

Should put into question Godfrey-Smith's understanding of Popper. Criticizing a view Popper did not hold is not much of a criticism, no?
