In the middle of an hour long meditation this morning the term “Meta systematic bypass” rang through my mind. It just surfaced again. Is this a thing?

FWIW I strongly agree that meditation stage models are, by and large, false and harmful

I would not even have a problem with them if they were approached and utilized as vague, approximate topographical sketches. But the RPG progression system-type interpretations seem a lot more common, at least in the spaces I frequent.

I think it's an incredibly useful heuristic in it's role as coherent metaphor to render a complex topic graspable with compact language. "Stage 4.5" is an elegant way if pointing at a large and wooly topic.

Somewhat agree, somewhat not. Cognitive shorthands can be great, when well-understood. A poorly-apprehended model can turn them into something more like cognitive short-circuits, and frequently do. Most of the terms of craft in wide circulation are misapplied, in my experience.

Ah, *that* model. I apologize for tweeting-while-preocupied. Yes, I personally have no bone to pick with heuristic models, approximations and whatnot. (Though it's frustrating how often these are turned into something rigid and stale by new users, after some proliferation.)
