A skeptical interlocutor might ask what differentiates rational and meta-rational assertion criteria from reasonable criteria, aside from which social context is making the judgment.

Yes… that’s why I have to write a long book instead of text blocks on twitter…

Yeah, *I* know what you mean but it's hard to talk about it out loud without sounding loony. "The Tao that can be spoken of" etc. etc. blah

Yup; it’s frustrating. I know I’m talking sense, because I have a coherent 200-page draft. But anyone listening to me blather on twitter either already understands all that (somehow), or else presumably figures I should stop with whatever drugs I’m taking and do something useful

I keep blathering because people seem to enjoy it. I seriously don’t understand why (given that most of what I say must seem extremely disjointed to most followers). The big picture into which the pieces fit is still mostly unpublished.

Off the cuff take on differentiating your criteria: Reasonable: Accountable to existing common understanding Rational: Accountable to existing formal system (but the formal system has to be ultimately mediated through existing common understanding)

Meta-rational: Has to construct its own accountability; may bricolage pieces of common and formal understanding but existing understandings are insufficient.

Just as a matter of terminology, I’m reserving “accountable” for reasonableness, because that’s the way it’s used in ethnomethodology, and I’m stealing most of my explanation of reasonableness from there.

Yeah, I'm mostly restating what you said but mangling the technical vocabulary, I guess. My only consolation is that it's a monstrously difficult thing to say!

The technical vocabulary is mostly just arbitrary choices I made for expositional clarity, and mostly haven’t (yet) told anyone about
