That inarticulate feeling of unease in a long algebraic simplification. You increasingly suspect SOMETHING must have gone wrong, cuz the terms are getting weird & ugly and refusing to mash together… No definitive trigger, but eventually you go back and look for a sign error…

conversely, i apparently had a very low threshold for what should count as ugly algebra and would give up way too easily but i had a friend who would just slog through the simplifications long after i would have given up...

just watching him work through problems a few times caused a cognitive switch to flip and made me more persevering. i still think this is one of the most useful math 'tricks' i've learned
